SCAM ALERT!

From the NARSOL WEB site
Those on sex offender registries targeted for telephone scams
March 10, 2018 Sandy

By Sandy . . . Scams offering to get someone off the registry for a fee have been around for a while. A new scam has appeared within the past few months, and as of this writing has targeted registrants in some form in at least four states: Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio, and New Mexico, with New Mexico being the most recent. All involve telephone calls to registrants claiming to be from someone at the registry office or police department and claiming the registrant is somehow out of compliance. From there the verbiage goes in one of several directions. Some are told to bring cash to the registry office. Some have details about the registrant and his past and his family and use threats. Some claim to have planted evidence of a new crime and threaten imminent arrest if instructions aren’t obeyed. Some haven’t asked for cash but told the registrant to go to the registry office immediately.
Local law enforcement in Arlington, TX opened a case as a terroristic threat, impersonating a police officer, and extortion. Officials in New Mexico said neither the police or registry officials would make such a telephone call.
So be aware. If you get any calls from anyone claiming to be officials and saying that you are in trouble in some way and need to go somewhere, don’t do it. Capture the phone number if you can and call your local law enforcement and registry office.

NARSOL – New Conference Call to Launch February 28th at 7:00 EST

How often have you wondered if your supervising or registry tracking officer can impose a particular requirement on you or if their demands may be unlawful? Our newest call-in forum will try to answer such questions. We hope you will join us for our maiden voyage of Can They Do That? and ask attorneys Katherine Strohl or Lea Bickerton if "They" can. Both attorneys are great assets to our NARSOL lineup and will do their best to respond to your question.
Sign Up Instructions
Although it is not mandatory, we ask that you sign up so that we have an idea how many will be attending the call. The phone number is 641.715.3660, followed by 957605#. You may call in directly with a telephone or, if you have a speaker and microphone or a headset with a mic, you may access the call through your computer by going hereand following the on-screen directions for inputting the number and the code given above.
Live Stream Option
We also are going to Live Stream the call on You Tube. There won't be any video, just an audio stream, so you can try this if you'd rather not call in. You can use your Roku or ChromeCast and have the call played over your TV. How cool is that?
Disclaimer
Keep in mind, responses provided on the program are merely intended to offer guidance and should not be construed as legal advice. We cannot cover the specifics of any individual's situation sufficiently to know what the most prudent course of action is, so NARSOL advises all participants to consult with an attorney in their jurisdiction to determine whether there may be a viable cause of action.
